The right start to your college career

The right start to your college career

Your first semester of college can be overwhelming. Here are five things you can do to get off to the right start:

  1. Remember that you are in charge of creating the life you want. No one is responsible for your life but you, and no one should care more about your life than you. If you want something, make it happen. Set goals. Find solutions. Banish excuses and blaming.
  2. Develop a growth mindset. Some people believe their abilities are fixed – either you’re good at math, or you’re not, for example. This isn’t true! You may have struggled through math classes in the past, but with enough hard work and dedication, you can learn anything. People with a growth mindset learn from their mistakes and find valuable lessons all around them. They are rarely bored and
rarely get “stuck,” because they are always looking for ways to grow. Find out more about the growth mindset here.
  3. Organize your time. Find an organization system that works for you. Get a planner, a whiteboard calendar, or use a tool like Microsoft Outlook or the apps on your smartphone. Plan out your semester, your week, your day. Set reminders and hold yourself to your schedule. Learn to say “no.”
  4. Get involved. Join a club. Attend a campus event. Go to that tai chi class during finals week to unwind. Start a study group with hard-working people in your biology class. Apply for an internship, a work study position, or a fellowship. Make friends and create support networks. Get out of your comfort zone and try something new.
  5. Ask for help. The most successful people aren’t necessarily the ones who don’t have any questions. The most successful people know that questions open doors they may never have imagined. Don’t wait until you’re failing English 101 to visit the Writing Center because you’re afraid of looking stupid. Smart people ask for help.
