AuthorsTwo Heritage social work students are working with a children’s book author on a project that documents the lives of children with disabilities. Ana Tapia and Delaney Helmersen spent the summer with author Karen Nicksich, helping with the photo documentary book Earth Angels.

The book features 10 families with children who have special needs. It chronicles the joys and challenges the parents of these children face on a daily basis.

Tapia and Helmersen met with the families and assisted on several of the photo shoots. Once classes began again in the fall, they started the process of sorting through 1,500 images to select the ones that will be featured in the book. In addition to working on their practicum, they are working with Nicksich to develop questions and interview the families featured in Earth Angels.

“Seeing Ana and Delaney connect with great people will help them realize that they are part of something big and beautiful. I will be forever thankful for the truly limitless potential that these young women have. Earth Angels is a book about community, empowerment, self-expression, self-esteem and love. I am very thankful for the opportunity to work with Miguel Juarez and Heritage University on this book,” Nicksich said.

Earth Angels is being published through Hay House and will be available before Christmas 2018.
